Allan was born in Kwinana in 1959, and attended Churchlands Senior High School as a music student from 1972 to 1976. He graduated from the University of Western Australia (UWA) with a Master of Music and completed postgraduate studies in London with distinguished musicians John McCaw, Antony Pay and Jack Brymer. Allan’s musical career has included seven years with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and positions in Massachusetts, USA. He has performed with many internationally renowned musicians. In 1990, Allan won the position of Principal Clarinet in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO). He has performed as a soloist many times with WASO including 12 performances of the much-loved Mozart Clarinet Concerto. He has performed as guest principal with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Allan is a member of the performance staff at UWA and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). He has premiered a number of new works including local composer James Ledger’s Clarinet Quintet and Blackwood by Iain Grandage and Kevin Gillam, another former Churchlands Senior High School student.
